The Call is a South Korean thriller film directed by Lee Chung-hyun and starring Park Shin-hye and Jeon Jong-seo, which was released in 2020. The Call is based on the 2011 British and Puerto Rican film. The Call featured Seo-yeon (Park Shin-hye) and Young-sook (Jeon Jong-seo), two women from different eras who meet through a phone call that changes their lives. The film was supposed to be released in theatres but was cancelled owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. On November 27, 2020, it was made available on Netflix worldwide.
The Call: Storyline Explanation
Kim Seo-yeon, 28, loses her cellphone while driving to see her ailing, estranged mother in a rural area in 2019. When she arrives at her decrepit childhood house, she discovers a decades-old cordless phone and receives calls from a distraught lady who claims her mother is torturing her. Seo-yeon discovers that the woman on the phone, Oh Young-sook, lives in the same house as him, but in 1999. Through the phone, the two are able to interact across time and share information about their lives. Young-sook is an orphan who lives with her shaman adoptive mother, whereas Seo-yeon lost her father in a fire that she blames on her mother, Eun-ae.
Young-sook slips out of the house to prevent the fire that killed Seo-father, yeon’s based on information from Seo-yeon. Seo-world yeon’s shifts as a result of her success: both of her parents are alive and well, and their home is sumptuous. Young-sook, on the other hand, is chastised by her mother and is bitter that Seo-life yeon’s is bettering while hers remains unchanged.

In 1999, Young-sook is visited by Seo-yeon, an 8-year-old girl, and her father, who have come to complete their purchase of the house. Young-sook assassinates Seo-father yeon’s and kidnaps his son. Seo-reality yeon’s shifts once more in 2019: her father has passed away, and the house has deteriorated even further.
Young-sook contacts Seo-yeon and tells her that she needs to figure out how she’ll be arrested. Seo-yeon initially gives Young-sook false information, but when Young-sook threatens to murder Eun-ae, Seo-yeon breaks into the local police station in search of the notebook she used in 1999.
Young-sook mocks Seo-yeon, implying that they are the same because Seo-yeon started the fire that killed her father and then claimed Eun-ae was to blame. Seo-yeon corrects Young-information, sook’s and her reality shifts once more: the house is now held by an older Young-sook, who has continued to slay serial killers unabated. The notebook’s content also changes, with a note stating Eun-ae arrived at the house with a police officer and dialled a number on the cordless phone.
Seo-yeon sits at the house waiting for the phone call, which he uses to warn Eun-ae. Young-sook assassinates a police officer in 1999 and pursues Eun-ae. Young-sook, who is older than Seo-yeon, reveals herself in 2019 and pursues her. Eun-ae picks up the phone once more, and Seo-yeon encourages her to fight.
Eun-ae ostensibly kills Young-sook, and the year shifts, with the home becoming dilapidated and old Young-sook vanishing. In a mid-credits sequence, the older Young-sook waited and accepted a call from her younger counterpart, warning her about Eun-ae and the cop, allowing her to rewrite her own history and erase Eun-ae from Seo-side.

The Call: Ending Explanation
Young Sook did not die after falling from a tremendous height, according to the post-credits of The Call. Young Sook had summoned herself from the future to give her past self some advise so that she may avoid dying. This is supported by the fact that when Seo Yeon’s mother throws Young Sook.
She does not exactly die, as the viewers can see her opening her eyes while laying in a pool of blood. It is also indicated that when Young Sook opens her eyes and sees Seo Yeon walking away from the graveyard with her mother, it could signify that Young Sook was able to save her past self, resulting in a paradox.
