Bird Box is a 2018 post-apocalyptic horror thriller film directed by Susanne Bier and written by Eric Heisserer, based on Josh Malerman’s 2014 novel of the same name. The film follows Sandra Bullock’s character, Malorie Hayes, as she struggles to safeguard herself and two children from creatures that drive people who gaze at them to commit themselves.
Bird Box had its international premiere at the AFI Fest on November 12, 2018, and went into restricted distribution on December 14, before becoming available on Netflix worldwide on December 21, 2018. Critics gave the film mixed reviews, yet it quickly became the most-watched film on Netflix within 28 days of its debut.

Olympia, a fresh pregnant survivor, arrives. Half of the group heads to the grocery shop where Charlie used to work to replenish their food supplies. They arrive in a blacked-out automobile equipped with a GPS navigation system. Malorie receives three pet birds in addition to their supplies.
She notes that the presence of the things agitates the birds. Later, a coworker of Charlie’s attacks the group, forcing them to look at the creatures. Charlie, on the other hand, gives up his life to save the others. They return to the house. Felix and Lucy then steal the automobile and drive away.
Against Douglas’ desires, Olympia lets a stranger named Gary into the house. Douglas is knocked unconscious by Cheryl, and the others lock him in the garage. Gary works on sketches of the animals he has seen before while Olympia and Malorie go into labour at the same time. He knocks Tom out and unlocks the garage door, exposing Douglas to the creatures.
Gary goes upstairs and takes the blinds off all the windows. Olympia is unable to turn away and, upon seeing the beast, jumps out the window, killing herself. Malorie hides beneath a blanket with both newborn infants as Gary compels Cheryl to look at the creatures, prompting her to stab herself in the throat with a pair of scissors.
Douglas flees the garage and tries to kill Gary with a shotgun, wounded him in the process, but Gary kills him with the scissors. Soon after, Tom begins to recover and fights Gary for the rifle. When Malorie hears a few gunshots, Tom approaches her and assures her that everything is alright.
Five years later, Tom and Malorie live with the children, who are referred to as “Boy” and “Girl.” They get communications from survivors advising them of a safe enclave buried in the jungle, reachable only by river boat. A group of unblindfolded survivors confronts them as they exit their house. Tom distracts the attackers, allowing Malorie and the children to flee.
He exposes his eyes and shoots all of the attackers, but then he kills himself after witnessing the creatures.
Malorie and the children ride a boat down the river blindfolded, carrying the birds to warn them of the entities. They face a number of challenges, including an unblindfolded survivor and river rapids. Malorie unexpectedly slips down a hill, separating the three soon after they reach shore. Malorie’s voice is used by the spirits to deceive the children into removing their blindfolds.
Malorie regains consciousness and tells the kids where she may be found. They ultimately make it to the village, which is a former school for the blind. Malorie finally releases the birds and names the youngsters Tom and Olympia, acknowledging that she is their mother.
