The Sadness is a 2021 Taiwanese horror movie that Rob Jabbaz, a Canadian filmmaker, wrote and directed in his feature film debut. It centres on Jim and Katie, a couple trying to get back together amid a viral outbreak that transforms everyone into sadistic maniacs.

On a typical day, Jim and Kat awaken in their apartment and get dressed. Jim notices a podcast interview after a brief argument on a potential trip. According to a medical professional, the harmful virus known as “Alvin” has the potential to evolve into something much more lethal. He calls for the establishment of a global quarantine.

ENDING EXPLANATION:

When Kat and Molly get there, the hospital is crowded with patients who have been hurt by the infected. An infected general assassinates the president after the government broadcasts an emergency message promising to take control of the situation. The Businessman and other sick residents smash through the doors as the hospital patients start to panic, drawing the attention of the nearby police officers. As the Businessman rapes Molly’s eye wound, infecting her, Kat flees into a staircase.

The Sadness

Jim runs away and makes his way to the city’s outskirts, passing sadistic acts in his path. He can get in touch with Kat, who provides his whereabouts. As they converse, he starts to cry and has a hallucination that he is infected because a broken mannequin head is starting to drink his blood and perspiration.

In another location, the Businessman pursues Kat through the hospital’s restricted passageways, but she uses a fire extinguisher to crush his head. Dr. Wong, who has been hiding in the maternity section, comes to Kat’s aid. Wong explains that he tried to discover a treatment for the Alvin virus, which connects the regions of the brain that control sex and violence in its mutant version. The infected, according to Wong, cry because they are aware of the dreadful things they do but are powerless to stop. He compares it to fighting the temptation to blink.

The Sadness

Wong administers Kat a virus serum when she discovers an infected baby in a medical waste container to see if she is immune to it. He acknowledges that he had performed identical tests on the newborns left in the abandoned unit, but Wong had to put all of them to death because they had contracted the infection. He will kill Kat if she contracts the disease, but she can stop the infection from spreading if she doesn’t. Jim, who has just arrived at the hospital, receives a text message from Kat with her whereabouts. Wong requests a military chopper to fly her to safety after realising she is resistant to the illness. Without him, the soldiers won’t be able to save her; he cautions her.

Two infected assault them as they ascend to the roof. Wong kills them but suffers injuries. When Jim eventually shows up, Wong, who is now infected, confesses to enjoying killing the babies as he is killed after a struggle. When Kat discovers that Jim is afflicted, she locks him outside the roof’s stairs. Jim tells her that he can conceive of no more loving deed than to mutilate and murder her, and that being infected feels amazing. Kat leaves through a door that leads to the roof while crying and suffering from mental damage. A short while after she leaves, automatic gunfire may be heard. Jim passes away with a smile while leaning on the stairway gate.
