Spiral also known as Spiral: From the Book of Saw is a 2021 American thriller film written by Josh Stolberg and directed by Darren Lynn Bousman. It is the ninth film in the Saw film series. The film, which stars Chris Rock, Max Minghella, Marisol Nichols, and Samuel L. Jackson, recounts police efforts to apprehend a Jigsaw impersonator. Executive producers include the series’ original creators, James Wan and Leigh Whannell, as well as Rock and series veteran Kevin Greutert.
After the release of Jigsaw in 2017, Chris Rock expressed a desire to venture into the horror genre, prompting speculation of a new Saw film. Jigsaw’s directors, the Spierig Brothers, were interested in returning for another feature but ultimately decided against it. Rock is now refining a script written by Stolberg and Goldfinger for the movie, which was publicly announced in May 2019. The rest of the ensemble joined in July, with filming in Toronto taking place in July and August.
Spiral was originally slated to be released in May 2020, but owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was postponed and was released theatrically in the United States on May 14, 2021, by Lionsgate. Critics gave the picture mixed reviews, praising the franchise’s new direction but disagreeing on whether it had truly succeeded in modernizing it.

Spiral: Ending Explanation
Banks gets apprehended while following a lead and awakens at the warehouse, shackled to a pipe with a hacksaw nearby. He considers chopping off his arm, but escapes with the help of a bobby pin. He then finds Peter Dunleavy, a former partner who was sacked and imprisoned after Banks uncovered a murder he committed, bound in place.
A massive glass-crushing machine in front of him has been modified to swiftly fling shrapnel towards him. A tape recorder states that Banks has the option of either releasing him or leaving him to die. Despite his efforts to save Dunleavy, Banks is unable to obtain the key in time.
Banks then discovers Schenk, who is revealed to have faked his own death by using the skinned corpse of the robber who lured Bozwick into the tunnels, and has been the copycat all along.
He reveals that his surname is Emmerson, and that he is the son of Charlie Emmerson, whom Dunleavy shot and killed because he consented to testify against a corrupt cop. He also discloses that Marcus, when serving as chief, purposefully sheltered corrupt cops in order to “sweep” the streets of crime more effectively under Article 8.
William, believing that Banks can be an ally, administers a last test, revealing Marcus restrained in the air and slowly being drained of blood. When William dials 9-1-1 and claims to be a civilian being pursued by a shooter, the operator sends a SWAT squad to his position.

He provides Banks a revolver with one cartridge and gives him the option of shooting a target that will save Marcus but allow William to escape, or killing William and letting his father bleed to death. Banks fires the target to save Marcus, loosening his bindings and dropping him to the ground, and then begins fighting William.
Shortly after, the SWAT squad comes and accidentally activates a tripwire, causing Marcus’ chains to tug him upward once more. The movement shows a gun attached to Marcus’ arm, leading the SWAT team to misidentify him as the shooter and kill him. As William flees, Banks shouts in anguish.
