Is There Any Inspiration For ‘The Black Phone’?

Yes, it is. In truth, The Black Phone is based on Joe Hill’s short story of the same name from 2004, which was written by Stephen King’s son. The short story may be found in Hill’s short story collection 20th Century Ghosts if you want to read it before viewing the movie.

This isn’t the first time one of Hill’s writings has been adapted. In 2014, Alexander Aja, the director of Crawl, adapted Hill’s novel Horns into a film starring Daniel Radcliffe, Juno Temple, and Max Minghella. After years of development hell, Hill’s comic series Locke & Key was made into a blockbuster series on Netflix.

In The Tall Grass, a Netflix film directed by Vincenzo Natali and starring horror veteran Patrick Wilson, was based on a novella Hill authored with his father King. Several of Hill’s novels have also been made into episodes of the Shudder anthology series Creepshow.
