The Silence: Ending Explanation
Hugh leads his family on foot after setting fire to Glenn’s automobile as a ruse. Lynn is struggling to keep up, and her coughing endangers the family. The family comes across a home with a high fence and a barred gate. The homeowner, who is completely oblivious of the situation, walks out and speaks, and the vesps tear her apart. The family enters the residence through a storm drain.
A rattlesnake appears in front of Jude, and after enticing the vesps with its rattle, they attack it. From behind, the attracted vesps bite Kelly’s leg. Hugh diverts their attention by starting a woodchipper, crushing the vesps that fly into it, and the family enters the house.
Ally calls her boyfriend, Rob, who informs her that his parents have died. She discovers that religious cults have sprouted up in the aftermath of the calamity. Kelly’s wound has become infected by the morning, so Hugh and Ally depart to fetch medication.
Ally sees vesp eggs developing inside corpses at the store. Hugh and Ally flee when a cult’s tongueless reverend tries to recruit them.
Kelly recovers after they return with the antibiotics. Ally discovers on the internet that vesps cannot survive in frigid temperatures, driving the family to plan a trip to the north. The reverend discovers the family’s hideout and arrives with his followers, indicating his intention to enlist Ally. Hugh pulls out his rifle and orders the cultists to leave. Rob informs Ally that he is heading north to “the shelter.” Hugh and Kelly awaken in the middle of the night to find a tiny girl at the door. They discover she is a member of the tongueless cult after allowing her to enter.
Phones strapped to her and strategically placed around the house ring, attracting vesps. The members of the cult kidnap Ally, but Grandma Lynn rushes outside to assist her. Lynn cries and holds Ally’s captors down; vesps kill her and the captors while Ally escapes. The family fights back and kills the majority of the cult’s members, including the reverend.
The family travels across America for weeks before arriving to the shelter. Ally finds Rob and they use arrows to hunt the vesps. Ally wonders if the vesps will adapt to the cold, as she did when she lost her hearing.
