Plot of Umma:

Amanda, a Korean immigrant, and Chrissy “Amani,” her home-educated daughter, live on a rural farm where they raise chickens, sell honey, keep bees, and avoid using modern technology because Amanda has a “allergic response” to electricity and gadgets. She is enraged when she learns that Chrissy wants to leave the farm to go to college. Amanda is faced by memories of her harsh upbringing when she gets the cremated remains of her recently deceased estranged mother, or Umma, in a suitcase from her uncle who is visiting her from Korea.

Without the ability to communicate in English and in the company of people who did not respect or practise her culture, Umma had been left to raise Amanda by herself in the United States. After receiving several electrical shocks as punishment from Umma, it is revealed that Amanda made up her “allergy” to electronics. When Amanda severed her relationship with her mother, she also severed her relationship with her entire Korean background, including giving up her family name. As he walked away, her uncle humiliated Amanda for leaving her own mother and family behind and for failing to impart Korean language and culture to Chrissy.

Umma

Soon after the ashes are delivered, a vengeful spirit that wants Amanda’s body for itself comes. As the paranormal events that have followed the delivery of her mother’s ashes develop—from visions of tortured Korean spirits to a run-in with a kumiho that was devouring her chickens—Amanda begins to feel increasingly paranoid and afraid that she is gradually turning into her own mother. When Amanda tries to bury the ashes, Umma successfully captures her daughter, allowing Amanda to experience her dread.

Chrissy discovers her mother doing the Jesa while decked out in a hanbok and mask. She is attacked by Amanda, but by pleading for her life, she is able to survive. Amanda makes the decision to approach her mom. She excuses herself for the mistreatment. Amanda admits that it was unjust to expect Umma to raise a child on her own in a foreign country and under difficult circumstances, but that this does not justify the abuse. Umma has now been able to move on and find peace thanks to her compassion and understanding because she has realized how terrible what she did to Amanda was. Amanda rediscovers her family history and shares it with her daughter towards the movie’s end, and she also learns to accept Chrissy’s need to live her own life.

How are Chris and Amanda rescued from Umma?

Amanda is drawn to her mother’s grave as she and Chris are preparing to leave, where she confronts her on a spiritual level. Amanda tells her mother that she understands how difficult it was for her to live in a foreign country where she didn’t speak the language and had trouble adjusting, and she pardons her for abusing her. Amanda explains to her mother that this does not, however, give her the right to mistreat her or make her stay at home.

Umma

After talking about their prior experiences, Amanda and her mother come to some sort of understanding. Amanda promises her mother that she will give her a proper jesa before departing permanently. Amanda’s mother appears to agree and then vanishes. Finally able to crawl to the surface, Amanda does so.

Amanda and Chris properly bury Amanda’s mother the following morning. Chris’s phone then rings, indicating that she has a text. Who is Chris referring to when she informs Amanda that “he’s on his way”?
