World War Z was released seven years ago, and it’s been nearly as long since Paramount has been rumoured to be working on a sequel.
The zombie film, based on Max Brooks‘ novel of the same name, was an unexpected box office success, grossing more than $500 million worldwide. The desire for a sequel was certainly there, so why hasn’t it materialised yet?
Perhaps, like the original film, a problematic development phase will eventually lead to an actual sequel taking place. However, as much as we hate to admit it, it appears to be a remote prospect right now.
But don’t give up totally! In January 2020, co-producer Jeremy Kleiner stated that a sequel could happen “someday.”
“Max Brooks‘ novel is fantastic. We adore the universe. It doesn’t feel like World War Z has come to an end “He explained in a way that is vague enough to leave us hoping that World War Z 2 will happen one day.
It is unknown when that day will come, but like the zombies in the film, the sequel could rise from the dead, and if it does, it will have had a long voyage to the screen.

Is World War Z 2 still going to be released?
The sequel was originally intended to be released in 2017, however that date passed without any work having commenced.
After being pushed back due to Brad Pitt’s commitment to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, production was set to begin in autumn 2018.
Another delay soon followed, this time due to director David Fincher’s work on Mindhunter season two, which meant that filming would begin in June 2019 instead, though that date was eventually pushed up to March.
But then came word that the sequel had been postponed even again, with Paramount halting pre-production on the sequel, apparently because China – one of the world’s largest movie markets – has a prohibition on zombie movies, making a sequel a dangerous proposition.
So, for the time being, the sequel is deader than a zombie shot in the head, but you never know, it could be resurrected in the future.

Who is in the cast of World War Z 2?
If a sequel is made, Brad Pitt is set to reprise his role as former UN investigator and intrepid zombie fighter Gerry Lane, although that could alter depending on when or if a filming date is set.
Mireille Enos revealed in May 2016 that she would reprise her role as his wife, Karin Lane. It’s unclear where things are nearly four years later, and no other casting has been disclosed.
